Our calendar of events from the week is chock full of concerts, talks, theatrical performances, workshops, music and dance concerts, art openings and festivals! So much to experience!
Friday (today), there will be a Mexican Independence Day Celebration at Chicano Park. At the Consulate of Mexico (in Little Italy), there will be a Mexican Independence Day Celebration with lots of live music, dance and food. At Sufi Mediterranean Cuisine, there will be a Lebanese Music & Fashion Show. Pacific Island Reggae artist Kolohe Kai will perform at Petco Park. The Digital Gym will screen the movie Nico. There will be additional showings on the following Sunday and Wednesday. Mexican grupera and romantic ballad group Los Temerarios will play at the Pechanga Arena.
Saturday and Sunday, the annual Viking Festival will take place in Vista.
Saturday, at the North University Community Library, there will be a storytime reading of the children's book Lolo's Sari-sari Store. The inaugural Chinelos Music and Dance Festival will take place in Gompers Park. At the Gaslamp Museum, you can enjoy Aloha Saturday with Kanaka Davis. At the Japanese Friendship Garden, the annual Otaku Smash Fest will go down. At Market on 8th, there will be a FilAm CreatorCon Mixer. The Ould Sod will hold its Annual Irish Wake festivities with live music, Irish food, and libations galore. Colombian singer, songwriter, and actor Maluma will perform at the Pechanga Arena. Mexican singer, actress, and model Danna Paola will sing at the Magnolia in El Cajon. Mexican singer Edén Muñoz performs at Harrah's. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas, the Indian Fine Arts Academy will host a Carnatic Vocal Concert. At Normal Heights Community Dev, Peña Flamenca Carmen Amaya will offer a Night of Flamenco music and dance featuring artists direct from Spain. Ozomatli will perform at the Belly Up. Dishwasher Dreams will open at the Old Globe.
Sunday, the House of Germany will hold its annual Lawn Program. At Dana Landing, the House of France will hold its annual Summer Picnic. There will be an opening for the Miniature Treasures Chinese Tea Exhibit at the Chinese Historical Museum. The Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs will screen at the Digital Gym. The Hausmann Quartet will present their annual Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime program at the Maritime Museum. The film biopic Selena will be shown atop the parking structure of the Hyatt downtown. At the Iranian American Center, there will be a reading of the Persian classic epic Story of Zahhak.
Monday, West African kora player extraordinaire Amadou Fall will perform at SDSU. The comedy Crazy Rich Asians will be shown at the Hyatt.
Tuesday, Bebel Gilberto will perform Brazilian tunes at the Belly Up. Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer, and Shahzad Ismaily will perform their program Love in Exile at UCSD's Epstein Family Amphitheater. The delightfully wacky film Everything Everywhere All at Once will be screened at the Hyatt.
Wednesday, the SD World Affairs Council will present a talk by Dr. Chayanika Deka on The Rise of Terrorism in Africa. Reggae group Gondwana will perform at the Beach House.
Next Thursday, at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, a new exhibit Formations will open featuring the works of Kelly Akashi. At UC San Diego Park & Market, there will be a reception for the Sol y Sombra: Immigrant Experiences in California exhibit. Mexican bands Inspector and El Haragán y Compañía will perform at the House of Blues. The Digital Gym will screen the Italian comedy Il Sorpasso. Clarinetist Alice Gallagher will perform a culturally diverse set of tunes at MiraCosta College in Oceanside. Puerto Rican–born Mexican singer Luis Miguel will sing at the Pechanga Arena.
All next weekend, the FoodieLand Night Market will take place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Next Friday, the Center for World Music has once again teamed up with the Mingei to present Cuban Music on the Commons. American-Colombian singer and songwriter Kali Uchis will perform at Viejas Arena. At the First Unitarian Universalist Church, Nishi La Tremenda: Opera Deconstructed will happen. Mexican musician, singer, and composer Christian Nodal will perform at the Pechanga Arena. Gilbert Castellanos will perform at the La Jolla Community Center. At the Turquoise Café-Bar Europa, there will be a Nomadic Bohemians Music and Dance Jabberwocks show.
Next Saturday, there will be a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at the International Cottages. At the Tierrasanta Library, there will be a talk on the life and works of Michelangelo. There will be an Acorn and Gall Natural Dye & Shibori Workshop at the San Diego Craft Collective in Liberty Station. At the Mingei, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival Preview Night Gala will take place. At the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living, there will be another Carnatic Vocal Concert. There will be 2 Grupo Folklorico Herencia Mexicana 5 Year Anniversary shows at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre. Mexican singer Ely Guerra will perform at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. At the Rancho Penasquitos Ranch House, Dr. Jon Spenard will give a talk on the Ancestral Maya Quarryscapes of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize. Alejandro Fernández will perform at Viejas Arena.
Next Sunday, the 27th annual Encinitas Oktoberfest will take place. The San Diego Sake Festival will take place at Venue 808. At the International Cottages, the House of Korea will hold their annual Lawn Program. Multi-genre Latin group Panteón Rococó will perform at Soma.
Local theatrical productions include Evita at the Cygnet Theatre, Cabaret, at the Old Globe, The Savoyard Murders at Scripps Ranch Theatre, Dragon Mama at Diversionary Theatre, and Dishwasher Dreams opens at the White Theatre at the Old Globe on Saturday.
